What is Edge Storage?

Many of the surveillance cameras have the MicroSD card slot, allowing the memory cards with the suitable storage capacity to be inserted. That is also referred to as the edge storage. It can be used for various purposes. In the most basic solution the edge storage is the primary storage and there is no NVR at all. However, the edge storage can also be used in combination with the NVR server.

MicroSD Card Synchronization

When the camera is streaming the live video to the NVR, then the NVR is the primary recorder. It receives the video and stores it. However, if there is an interruption in the network then the camera can continue recording the video clips locally on its edge storage. When the connection to the NVR is restored, then the recorded files on the edge storage will be synchronized with the NVR server. This ensures the seamless video coverage at all times.

应用

The failover solution containing primary NVR and the edge storage is often used in the projects requiring higher level of video redundancy. Although there are also redundancy servers available that can take over the recording process when the primary NVR is not reachable, there may still be situation where even the redundancy NVR cannot access the cameras due to the network issues. In such cases, camera being able to record on its own storage is the only way to assure seamless video recordings.
