H.265 Adaptive Stream

Next generation video compression delivering high video quality and low bandwidth.

Resumen

What is H.265?
High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), also known as H.265, is a video compression standard and a successor to the widely used H.264. In comparison to H.264, HEVC offers about double the data compression ratio at the same level of video quality or substantially improved video quality at the same bit rate.

ACTi utilizes the powerful HEVC compression in its cameras to deliver imagery of exceptional quality while simultaneously reducing the required bandwidth.

What is H.265 Adaptive Stream?
While H.265 has become a mainstream technology, the leading manufacturers have been developing this technology further by achieving even lower bandwidth consumption levels compared to standard H.265 codec.

ACTi as a technology leader has developed the extended technology called H.265 Adaptive Stream. It is similar to the other known technology extensions such as Zip or Smart Stream or H.265+. So when there is a requirement for a product to have H.265+, you can simply specify ACTi's H.265 Adaptive Stream products.

How does H.265 Adaptive Stream Work?
H.265 Adaptive Stream can further compress the images by the combination of various methods, including long GOP and ROI-based dynamic compression. The long GOP means that there is a longer time interval between the I-frames, and the ROI-based dynamic compression means that more bits of data are allocated to describe the details of the most important regions of interest in the view of the camera, while compressing the static regions and backgrounds even further. As a result, the size of the video stream will be 2-3 times smaller than the standard H.265 stream.

Aplicaciones

The main applications of using H.265 Adaptive Stream is to save the bandwidth and storage space.

There are projects where the cameras have to stream video over the public Internet to the control center where the recorder is located at, and the upstream bandwidth ranges may have a significant cost differences from the Internet Service Provider. Lowering the bitrate of the camera while preserving video quality allows choosing lower bandwidth plans from the provider.

At the same time, this compression technology allows saving the NVR storage space. With the same disk sizes it is now possible to record more days, or alternatively, you need smaller size hard drives for the same number of recording days compared to standard H.265 or H.264. Hard drives cost is quite significant in the total budget of the project, therefore optimizing the storage leads to significant savings.

Soluciones

To make a good use of H.265 Adaptive Stream, both the camera and the VMS have to support it. As a Unified Solution provider, ACTi ensures that the cameras and the VMS products are well-integrated under H.265 Adaptive Stream protocol.
