Detect smoking by the hand gestures and the cigarette in the mouth

What is Smoking Detection?
Smoking detection is the AI feature inside the surveillance camera or NVR that analyzes the video stream and notices when a person is smoking a cigarette. Due to the cigarettes may appear very small in the view of the surveillance camera, in order to prevent false alarms, the smoking detection is fully confirmed only in the moment when the two situations occur at the same time - the cigarette is clearly visible in the mouth and the person's hand is touching the cigarette at the same time.

Scene Requirements
Due to cigarettes are very small in the view of the surveillance cameras, the rule of thumb is that the cigarette in the view should be clear enough so that a human watching the video could clearly see it. Furthermore, the best results can be achieved with good lighting conditions. Most critical locations, such as gas stations, would always have good lighting conditions in the non-smoking area.

Anwendungen

There are several indoor and outdoor locations where the smoking is strictly forbidden. Some of the locations are not only the health hazard in terms of the impact from the smoke, but also a fire hazard, such as smoking in the gas station while refilling the car. The smoking in the gas station triggers an instant alarm. It is even possible to create an automatic voice alert at the gas station to remind the person to stop smoking immediately, which will be triggered by the AI-based smoking detection.

Lösungen

It is possible to use ACTi's Smoking Detection cameras together with ACTi's ZNR-series NVR or with Windows-based NVR 3 servers. The VMS will receive the alerts from the cameras and handle the events by video pop-up, sound alert, sending an email alert and more.

Furthermore, some of the latest ZNR-series NVR servers have the built-in Smoking Detection capability - it is possible to use a regular surveillance camera without built-in AI and still run the smoking detection thanks to the NVR-side AI capabilities. Read More
