ACTi RoHS FAQ
Q: What is RoHS?
RoHS is European Union (EU) Directives stand for
restriction of the use of certain hazardous
substances in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS).
The RoHS directive restricts the use of certain
hazardous substances in electrical and electronic
equipment shipped in to the EU as of July 1, 2006
regardless of the manufacture date of the equipment.
The substances identified by the RoHS Directive as
hazardous are:
• Lead (Pb)
• Mercury
• Cadmium
• Hexavalent Chromium
• Polybrominated Biphenels (PBB)
• Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE)

Q: Do any ACTi products contain RoHS listed
substances?
Yes. Most electrical and electronic products have
used basic tin/lead solder technology, and many ACTi
products will continue to use lead-based solders
under the exemption allowed for network
infrastructure equipment.
Small amounts of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent
chromium, PBB and PBDE can also be found in a few
electrical and electronic components.
As of 1st July 2006 RoHS substances in ACTi products
will either be less than the specified limit, or
will fall under exemption(s) exercised by ACTi.

Q: What is ACTi roadmap of RoHS
implementation?

Q: How does ACTi verify the materials from
vendors are RoHS compliance?
To ensure RoHS-compliance of components, ACTi
requests analysis by a third party laboratory or an
RoHS-compliance declaration by the manufacturer.

Q: Does ACTi test all products for every item
on the material declarations?
No. If we did that, we would get a very big bill
from a laboratory, which most certainly would be
passed on to the customer. We rely on information on
the concentration of RoHS and other declarable
substances in the materials from suppliers. If the
information is not available, we can act in two
ways: 1. Test each homogeneous material. 2. Stop
doing business with that client.

Q: Does ACTi have capability to produce RoHS
compliant products?
Identified lead-free production lines have been
ready since November 2005. The lead-free process,
including solder paste, solder bar and process
control parameters, has been developed and
standardized in our manufacturing system.

Q: How does ACTi ensure the reliability of
RoHS products?
Reliability of ACTi products will be analyzed and
certified by independent laboratories. Only once
certification is complete will ACTi announce the
product as RoHS compliant.

Q: Will there be a cost-up issue associated
with the change to RoHS products?
Yes, the cost-up range of RoHS products ranges from
10% to 30%, depending on material and production
costs.
