Question1: How many Megapixel cameras does it support?
Nowadays, no one will doubt megapixel camera is the mainstream in the IP surveillance market. However, most Standalone NVRs don’t support high resolution cameras. It doesn’t make sense to go for IP solution and limit yourself to standard resolution due to lack of VMS support. Read the datasheet carefully before you make the decision.
Question2: Is the OS and software stable?
Although it is a debatable issue, most industrial users still consider Linux a more stable and reliable OS. The software itself is also significant regarding to the stability. Fully test the system seems the only way to evaluate this part.

Question3: Is it flexible for future expansion?
The major inconvenience of DVR is that customers cannot add, for example, the 9th camera to an 8-channel recorder without replacing the whole machine. To keep the existing investment and largely lower down the cost of project expansion, the system should be able to allow any number of camera license keys to be added into a standalone NVR, even months or years later.

Question4: Do I need to log in the NVR server via another computer?
If the standalone NVR supports “local display,” you could connect your monitor via the VGA output and then operate the system directly. However, in some scenarios this function is not that crucial if you seldom pay attention to the live video, otherwise remote monitoring is more important.

Question5: Is it convenient to do RMA?

Sending back the appliance to manufacturer or RMA center is costly and sometimes a nightmare. There’s one type of design can significantly reduce the cost of RMA: preloading the video management program in the DOM (disk on module) chip. Instead of shipping the whole machine back, simply replacing the small DOM chip will be the most convenient and efficient solution.

Besides above five factors, customers may also consider the total recording hours, RAID support, supported camera manufacturers, smart phone application and so on. You are welcome to send us feedback if you have other thoughts.
