Background
Sites with fiber networks are taking advantage of the high bandwidth speeds that fiber allows to deploy superior quality megapixel IP video surveillance systems. An example of this can be seen in a recent Hotel installation, where the management wanted to deploy CCTV in multiple buildings within the hotel grounds linked back to one central control room in the office of the main building.

 

Solution
As there was fiber connecting all of the building where they wished to deploy CCTV, an IP solution with megapixel cameras was ideal as fiber has a faster and greater bandwidth throughput than CAT5 or wireless solution. Also fiber connects buildings over a greater distance than CAT5 cable. In this instance the Hotel was able to invest in a 5MP camera to take high quality footage of car registration plates at a 30m distance.

 

Additional ACTi ACM-1231 1.3MP bullet cameras and ACM-7411 1.3MP Vandal proof dome cameras were deployed in the car park, the outbuildings, front gates, the staff entrances and the exterior hotel to provide a comprehensive surveillance system. All cameras were linked back to one central control room via the fiber network and run off one server.

 

With the IP system in place, the system can be added to win internal cameras. Unlike DVR boxed which typically only have 4, 8, 16, 32 channels, this IP solution based on Milestone Professional VMS is scalable to 64 cameras. Where fiber is already in place it is ideal for an IP network solution. However fiber is expensive to install in a green field site and in such an instance wireless solutions should be explored.
