Aero India is an air show that takes place biennially in Bangalore at the Yelahanka Air Force Station. One of the premier aviation exhibitions in Asia, the show was first held in the year 1996 and has acquired the position of being the fourth largest air show in the world. Managed jointly by the Ministry of Defense and the Confederation of Indian Industry, it has emerged out as a niche on the international arena as a renowned aerospace exposition.
The five-day Aero India 2009, was held at Indian Air Force station Yelahanka, and saw the participation of 592 companies from 25 countries -- 303 international and 289 India. Over two hundred thousand visitors attended the show. This includes fifty thousand business visitors alone. During these events there is the possibility of many security issues that can occur in public. These range from trespassing, theft, arson, riots or acts of public disorder.
For the Ministry of Defense, managing safety was a challenging task. Network Video was an essential tool that was implemented for monitoring the Yelhanka Air force station. Efficiency was greatly enhanced through the use of Network Camera Solutions. To meet the highest security standards, ACTi's partner in India, BSW Soft, has successfully provided an IP surveillance solution using ACTi NVR Professional Software to provide an apt solution for this very important event. Implementation of the solution was done using the services of BSW partner Guardian Inc, Bangalore.
Site surveys were done months before the exhibition as the complete working of the system was to be checked for an entire month by various intelligence agencies and the Indian Air Force (IAF) officials. The site survey indicated the need for both fixed cameras and cameras with Pan/Tilt/Zoom capability. 110 pieces of ACM-4000 IP Cube cameras were installed in the aero plane hangars which doubled as exhibition halls and other specific positions to provide detailed images for monitoring of those areas. Another 23 pieces of ACM-8511, PTZ Cameras were set up in the front and back entrances, parking lot and other open spaces. ACTi NVR Professional Software with ACTi IP cameras was adopted to ensure the safety for every corner of the Yelhanka Air force Station.

The control room for video surveillance was situated within the Flight Operations Center (FOC) and was to be manned during all hours before, during and after the exhibition times. Fourteen ACTi NVR servers were used and there were 14 monitors displaying all the connected cameras at all times. Another 2 systems were assigned specific reasons. One for viewing live-feed from any particular server/camera of interest and another for viewing recorded video from any server/camera, as the live viewing of the entire exhibition were not to be disturbed. The entire recording was done using a Storage Area Network (SAN). The control room was manned at all times by people from different government departments. There would always be one soldier from
the Special Forces, one official from the Intelligence Bureau and 3 officers fromthe Indian Air Force in addition to the 2 camera operators. During the course of operations, the surveillance system assisted in crowd management, preventing vandalism or theft and also helped unite a family with a lost child.
Using the IP Video Surveillance solution from ACTi Corporation, BSW ensured the smooth running of the AERO INDIA 2009.
